Illegal Suffern yeshiva remains open

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of students continue to attend a Suffern yeshiva that has been issued violations for operating illegally out of a private home.

Although the single-family home on Highview Road that houses the Ohel Yachanan yeshiva is zoned residential, administrative offices and four classrooms for 65 children have been set up inside.

Ramapo Town Attorney Michael Klein says the yeshiva is operating without a permit, it has no emergency doors, and its fire alarm is not connected to the county's fire control center.

The Ohel Yachanan yeshiva had recently vacated 19 Neil Road in Monsey for similar violations. The organizers of the yeshiva are due in court Oct. 27.
