Tappan Zee Bridge repairs pulverize budget
Transportation officials say Tappan Zee Bridge repairs have exceeded the original budget by $24 million.
The price tag to replace the bridge's road deck and repair its worn-out joints was estimated at $147 million when the project got under way in 2007. The new estimate stands at $171 million.
The New York Thruway Authority says crews discovered deterioration in the steel support structures of the bridge, which required additional expenses.
Commuters say it appears the old bridge is always in need of repairs, raising safety concerns. The bridge is expected to be replaced entirely after 2010.
