Police: Monsey murder scene torched

Posted: Updated:

The trailer where a homeless man was found beaten to death over the weekend in Monsey was set on fire Tuesday, police say.

Investigators are trying to determine who started the fire inside the abandoned trailer, and whether there is a connection between the arson and the murder.

On Saturday, investigators found the body of 54-year-old Eugeniy Kovalev inside the trailer located behind the old Rockland Drive-In movie theater. Police say the victim had been kicked in the head, face and chest, and left to die.

Mariusz Lopata, 20, was later arrested and charged with Kovalev's murder. Lopata is due back in court in September.
