Truck plunges into Ramapo River; driver killed
A tractor-trailer transporting garbage went off an overpass on I-87 in Hillburn Tuesday and plummeted 40 feet into the Ramapo River, killing the driver.
Police say the driver, a 43-year-old Pennsylvania resident, was apparently speeding when he crashed into the river.
The cab of the truck split into pieces on impact and the trash quickly started spreading through the river. Dive teams arrived on the scene to place barriers in the water to stop diesel fuel, engine oil and garbage from spreading further.
Suffern has shut down its water wells to prevent the refuse in the river from entering its water supply.
