Wake held for teen who drowned in Verplanck
Friends and family gathered in Haverstraw Monday to mourn the loss of 17-year-old Victor Polanco, who drowned at an off-limits swimming hole in Verplanck June 25.
Relatives say Polanco and some friends ignored the signs and fences around the quarry, which is on private property owned by Con Edison. Friends say Polanco dove into the swimming hole and never surfaced. Good Samaritans who were nearby at the time of the incident pulled Polanco out of the water, but were unable to revive him.
A funeral Mass was held for Polanco at St. Peters Church in Haverstraw Tuesday.
