Powerful storm tears through Hudson Valley
A powerful storm ripped through the Hudson Valley Tuesday, causing property damage and power outages.
Con Ed is reporting nearly 1,000 power outages scattered in the Sound Shore area of Westchester because of the storm. Officials also say more than 1,800 customers were left without power in Orange and Rockland counties. Power has not yet been restored.
In Katonah, a family says lightning struck a tree outside their home at about 8 a.m. Homeowner Peter Spink says the current traveled into his house and caused an electrical outlet under a sink to blow, resulting in a small fire.
James McHugh, assistant fire chief of the Katonah Fire Department, says the incident was minor. However, he cautioned lighting can start more serious fires.
"If it hits a house, it can knock all the electrical out ? it's definitely a hazard," McHugh says.
