Quick thinking saves couple from blaze
A Haverstraw police lieutenant is being hailed for some quick thinking on Mother's Day when he spotted a fire on a balcony and helped save an elderly couple.
Martin Lund, who is with the Haverstraw Police Department, says he was heading home Sunday when he saw the fire and quickly called it in.
"I ran up and banged on the door and the woman inside wanted to know who it was," he says. "I told her it was Lt. Lund from the police department and she opens the door and said, 'I think I have a fire on my deck,' and I said, 'I believe you do.' "
Lund made sure the elderly couple inside were safely out the door and then grabbed a bucket and began dousing the fire with water before the responding firefighters arrived.
