Cops: Man picks up marijuana delivered by mail
A man was arrested Thursday when he went to pick up 15 pounds of marijuana delivered by mail to a home on Elm Street unbeknownst to the homeowner, police say.
Cobral Edwards, 25, was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, and police impounded his car. Authorities say they received a tip about the delivery of the $45,000 worth of marijuana to the house, where Edwards doesn't live.
Peekskill Police Chief Eugene Tumulo says drugs sent through the mail are more common than most people think. This shipment was tightly wrapped, with the scent covered by another substance, police say.
"There is great care that's taken when packaging this to eliminate odor from the packaging so it's not just stuffed into a box," Tumulo says.
Tumulo says police adapted to the methods of big-time drug traffickers. However, he says he is concerned that the minor drug dealers selling small quantities of drugs are hurting the community.
"We're very good at this, but the problem, the symptomatic problems have never abated but continue in greater numbers then ever before," he says.
Edwards' arrest was the culmination of a collaborative investigation that included the Westchester County Police, the Village of Ossining Police Department and the U.S. Postal Service.
