A Newburgh man was stabbed to death Thursday night by members of the Bloods street gang, police say.
Authorities say 34-year-old Tyrik Leggette was stabbed eight times by as many as 20 known members of the gang just steps away from where he lived with relatives.
Leggette was reportedly attacked on Lander Street after a group of people stopped him for a cigarette. Police did not disclose whether Leggette was targeted, but they say he was not a gang member.
Family members describe Leggette as a good father who loved his two young children.
"It's going to be very, very tough dealing with this," says the victim's brother. "Especially now that I know he's gone. He'll be there in spirit."
Police say they are questioning several suspects and are expecting to make arrests. Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to call the City of Newburgh Police Department at 845-561-3131.
