Police nab 2 carjacking suspects in Spring Valley
Two illegal immigrants were arraigned Friday in Spring Valley for allegedly attempting to carjack a vehicle while a mother and her child were inside.
Police say Manuel Quintana, 30, and Jose Malan-Pomaeyna, 20, tried to break into a car at the parking lot on Grove Street Thursday night while a 24-year-old Spring Valley woman and her daughter were waiting for relatives who were attending church services.
"They walked away from the car, came back moments later with a rock and tried to smash the window of the car," says Sgt. Ray Nikisher, of the Spring Valley Police Department.
Police say one of the suspects instructed the other in Spanish to break the glass. The woman, however, was able to drive off and call the police. The mother and child were not hurt in the incident.
The suspects were taken into custody in the vicinity of the crime scene. Police say at the time of the arrest one of the men still had a rock in his hand.
Quintana and Malan-Pomaeyna face criminal mischief and attempted robbery charges. Police say Quintana has a prior criminal record in Spring Valley as well as out of state. Both men are expected back in court next week.
