One man is dead and was another critically injured after a car accident in Warwick.

Police say the accident happened at about 5 a.m. Monday on Route 1 between Horseshoe Lane and Blooms Corners Road.

Investigators say the driver lost control of his Nissan Sentra, sending the car into a pond about 7 feet deep.

Emergency crews pulled the driver and a passenger out of the water and rushed them to St. Anthony's Hospital. One of the men was pronounced dead at the hospital and the other man is in critical condition on a respirator after authorities say he spent about 15 minutes under water.

Police say drunken driving may be to blame for the accident after beer cans were found in the vehicle.
