Police: Off-duty officer kills out-of-control bar patron
An off-duty sheriff's deputy fatally shot a bar patron in Chester, who allegedly attempted to run someone over Saturday morning, police say.
Sources say the incident happened shortly after midnight, when a man was thrown out of GW Tavern on Brookside Avenue for getting into an argument with the bouncer. Witnesses say the patron got behind the wheel of his SUV and drove onto the sidewalk, trying to run the bouncer over.
Sherriff Deputy Jeremy Yela, who was at the scene, attempted to intervene, but the patron allegedly refused to back down. That is when, police say, the officer fired his gun, killing the man.
Yela, who has been with the sheriff's office since 1998, will likely be placed on administrative duty pending an investigation into whether he followed protocol when he fired his weapon.
