The driver of a minivan lost control and careened into a ditch along Route 17M in Blooming Grove after crashing head on into a Coach USA commuter bus Thursday.

Police say 17-year-old Bryant Chavez, of Warwick, who was behind the wheel of the minivan, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, including head trauma and numerous broken bones. The two passengers on the bus who were treated for minor injuries are expected to recover.

Investigators believe Chavez?s vehicle spun out of control after hitting a patch of black ice on the road.

Police re-routed traffic along Route 17M for several hours while conducting a full reconstruction of the crash scene.
