Jury acquits soldier in 'fragging' trial

Posted: Updated:

A jury found Staff Sgt. Alberto Martinez not guilty Thursday on all counts in the deaths of two Hudson Valley officers.

After a six-week trial, Martinez was acquitted of killing Capt. Phillip Esposito, of Rockland, and 1st Lt. Louis Allen, of Orange, in Iraq in 2005.

Esposito and Allen died when a rigged Claymore exploded outside their room while the men were playing a board game. According to witness testimony, Martinez hated Esposito, who was his superior in the 42nd Infantry Division.

The victims? families, which were anxiously awaiting the verdict in West Point, were disappointed by Martinez?s acquittal.
