Hunt on for suspect who stole SUV with toddler inside
Middletown police are searching for a suspect who stole an SUV with a 3-year-old boy inside Tuesday.
The boy was reunited with his parents after police officers found him sleeping in the back seat of his parents' stolen Jeep Liberty. Authorities say the vehicle was left in the parking lot of a medical office.
According to authorities, the boy was buckled up in the back seat of the black SUV while his mother was inside a Middletown delicatessen. That is when a man jumped into the driver?s seat and took off, police say.
The distraught mother called 911, and officers throughout the area went on a lookout for the vehicle. Shortly after, two state police officers spotted the Jeep in the Town of Wallkill five miles away.
As Middletown police were rushing to the spot where the Jeep was discovered, their patrol car collided with a minivan, hitting a crossing guard. Everyone involved in the crash is expected to fully recover.
Police are now using K-9 units and helicopters to find and arrest the car thief. Anyone with information is asked to call Middletown Police Department at 845-344-5300.
