Investigation continues in Mount Vernon shooting

Posted: Updated:

Authorities say the young father shot and killed Sunday morning while holding his infant son was Mount Vernon?s eighth homicide this year.

The shooting took place around 7 a.m. in front of 463 South 11th Ave. in Mount Vernon. Police say they are actively looking for the gunman who shot and killed 18-year-old Hassan Green.

Police had just completed a checkpoint that morning to get illegal handguns off the streets. City officials say they are doing all they can.

?I?m not burying my head in the sand,? said Mayor Clinton Young. ?We face challenges; we will regroup our resources and address the situation head on.?

Police say the shooting does not appear to be gang-related and it is too early to speculate on a motive.
