Car jumps curb, smashes into Orangeburg restaurant
A driver accidentally jumped a curb in a parking lot of a shopping plaza Tuesday morning, smashing two glass walls of a restaurant before crashing into a pillar of the building, police say.
Authorities say the incident happened at around 11 a.m. at Prel Plaza on the corner of Orangeburg and Dutch Hill roads.
The accident was captured on surveillance video, showing the white car driving through the parking lot before crashing into the walls after taking out several outdoor tables and chairs at Yogi?s Restaurant.
The crash left the front and left facades of the eatery shattered, showering the sidewalk and parking lot with shards of glass.
Tony Ossipov, who was eating breaking at Yogi?s at the time of the accident, says he rushed out to the car to remove the keys from the ignition to make sure the car was stopped and to check on the driver.
?She was a little excited, a little terrified, but she was OK,? he says, referring to the driver, 65-year-old Katherine Lozada.
According to Ossipov, several patrons were seated in front of the window just minutes before the crash. People who witnessed the accident as it happened and those who saw the aftermath agree it is a miracle no one was hurt.
Orangeburg police are examining Lozada's car to establish whether a mechanical problem led to the accident. So far, no charges have been filed.
