Indian Pt. sirens await federal OK, will miss deadline

Indian Point?s new sirens won?t be running in time for the Aug. 14 deadline set by Entergy, making the system more than a year and a half late.
The target date was set earlier this year but won?t be met because FEMA has not given the siren system its final approval. Plant owner Entergy has already been fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for missing other deadlines.
While the sirens are physically ready to go, they cannot start without federal approval.
FEMA spokesman Michael Beeman says the agency will continue to work on getting the system approved. The old sirens will continue to be used to notify the public of an emergency at the plants.
