West Nyack man killed by freight train

Posted: Updated:

A 22-year-old man was struck and killed by a freight train in West Nyack Sunday evening.

Police say Ryan Fitzsimon was walking along the tracks between West Highway and Pineview Road when he was hit by a CSX freight train. Authorities believe Fitzsimon never heard the train, which was heading northbound hauling boxcars and tankers.

CSX Corporation says the train was on its way from Newark, N.J. to Selkirt, N.Y.

The Rockland County medical examiner is scheduled to do an autopsy on Fitzsimmons Tuesday.
