Police presence increased in wake of Nyack gang fight

Posted: Updated:

Orangetown police have beefed up their presence in Nyack Thursday after a gang-related fight involving more than 40 teenagers.

According to police, a gang from Spring Valley and a rival gang from Nyack converged on the streets Wednesday. Police say the melee stemmed from an incident at Nyack High School earlier in the day involving a girl. They say students, many of whom were armed with bats and knives, contacted others on cell phones to meet up and fight.

Police say during the bloody brawl, one teen was stabbed multiple times and another was hit with a hammer. They say windows on parked cars were punched out. In the end, five people were arrested, most charged with disorderly conduct.

The campus at Nyack High School was closed Thursday, meaning students were not allowed to leave the building. There was also increased monitoring in the hallways.

Police plan to have extra patrols on hand for the next few days in an effort to keep the streets of Nyack safe. Copssay daytime Nyack melee was planned gang fight
