Tip leads cops to search lake in 1999 murder mystery

Police and divers combed Crystal Lake in Newburgh Thursday after a tip sparked a new search for a body in a 1999 murder mystery. Dominick Pendino went missing on March 3, 1999. Police say blood was found all over his Sterling Court driveway in Walkill, but no body was ever found. Larry Weygant and Greg Chrysler, both of Newburgh, were arrested months later and eventually convicted of Pendino?s murder in a landmark case.
Given the amount of blood at the crime scene, a forensic pathologist testified that Pendino must have died. Police have been searching for his remains ever since.
In May 2007, police tore up farmland in Montgomery searching for Pendino?s body. Cadaver-sniffing dogs hit on two spots on the property, but what at first looked promising, turned up nothing. It was the fifteenth property police searched for Pendino?s body.So far, no evidence of the murder turned up in the water. Police did recover three safes and two cars, one that was reported stolen in 2003.
Police say even though two people are in prison for Pendino?s murder, the case will not be over until they find his body.
