Police group calls for change after Mt. Vernon cop shot

Nearly a month after an off-duty Mount Vernon officer was fatally shot by cops, an organization rallied for change Sunday.
The National Black Police Association spoke outside of the Mount Vernon Police Department Sunday. They are demanding better training for officers so they don't shoot each other. They also want to know why authorities initially only released the black officer's name in the shooting of Christopher Ridley, who was also black.
"Politicians, lawmakers in Westchester need to sit down and develop comprehensive training and programs," said NBPA Westchester Executive Director Damon Jones. "It can't be politics as usual."
Ridley's father, Stanley, joined leaders at the rally, but was too heartbroken to speak.
Four Westchester County cops shot Ridley, 23, Jan. 25 in White Plains. Authorities believe Ridley, who was posthumously promoted to detective, was trying to break up a fight while he was off duty. They believe Ridley was struggling with a suspect who grabbed his weapon.
