Ex-NYPD commissioner still using disqualified lawyer

(AP) - A month after he was disqualified fromthe corruption case against former New York City policeCommissioner Bernard Kerik, defense lawyer Kenneth Breen was stillat his side Thursday for a pretrial hearing. The judge who threw him off the case seemed to take Breen'sappearance in stride, but the prosecutor seemed surprised - andunsure if it was legal. Kerik, 52, was indicted in November on charges includingaccepting free apartment renovations, lying to the White House andfiling false income tax returns. On Jan. 23, after prosecutors saidBreen might end up as a government witness, Judge Stephen Robinsondisqualified him and told Kerik to get a new lawyer by Friday. Breen told the judge Thursday that Kerik would comply with hisorder but needed two more weeks to find a new attorney. The judge gave him until March 21, but hinted that there wouldbe no more extensions.
