The cafeteria and auditorium of the Adolph Schreiber Hebrew Academy of Rockland were destroyed by fire Tuesday, but six Torah scrolls kept in the building's synagogue were carried out of the burning structure unharmed.

Officials say a deliveryman saw smoke and flames and called in the fire around 3 a.m. More than 100 firefighters from Monsey, Tallman and Suffern battled the fire at the 50-year-old Hebrew academy for an hour and a half.

The auditorium and cafeteria are now a burned-out shell of what they used to be. However, the main part of the building where classrooms and offices are located were not damaged due to the efforts of firefighters.

Investigators say the fire appears to have started in a storage area. They do not think the cause is suspicious.

The co-ed Orthodox school serves more than 400 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The principal says classes will probably be canceled until next week. However, religion instruction may resume sooner in another part of the building.
