Hudson Valley drivers contend with messy commutePosted: Updated:
Orange County officials say they handled more than 250 calls for accidents and disabled vehicles Friday as icy road conditions made for a dangerous morning commute.
One accident was fatal. Town of Goshen police say a Ford Escort hit some ice and crossed into oncoming traffic early Friday. The car collided head-on with a Jeep, whose passengers survived the crash. David DeGroat, the driver of the Escort, died in an ambulance after the crash.
Icy roads are blamed for numerous accidents and spin-outs around the Hudson Valley. By midday, Orange County 911 reported 259 incidents. A New York state trooper was injured in a crash while responding to another crash. His injuries were not serious.
Rockland County was hit with more of a rain and sleet mix. Icy roads melted early on, but drivers still had to contend with messy road conditions.
