Fire leaves 6 elderly Bardonia residents homelessPosted: Updated:
Some elderly residents of a Bardonia complex are adjusting after they were burned out of their apartments over the weekend.
A fast-moving fire swept through the Monterey Gardens senior complex Saturday, destroying eight units and leaving the entire complex without heat or electricity for several hours.Amateur video shows 80 firefighters from Nanuet, New City, West Nyack, Pearl River and Orangeburg battling flames, which they brought under control in two hours. The fire melted vinyl siding and caused a roof collapse.
Some residents were not allowed back inside to retrieve their belongings. While no one was hurt, Hubert Glassey said the complex allowed his 49-year-old sister, who has cerebral palsy, to live independently.
"She's now homeless," said Glassey. "All her clothes are in there and there's fire damage, water damage and smoke damage."
The Red Cross has provided temporary shelter for four out of the six residents who were left homeless.
The fire has not been deemed suspicious.
