Family rallies after deliveryman slain in Yonkers
A family rallied Sunday to stop the violence after a food deliveryman was slain in Yonkers.
Relatives and friends of Martin Perez, 25, attended a special service at Messiah Baptist Church then held a rally in the lobby. The group then walked to the building where Perez was gunned down Dec. 17.
The group chanted "enough is enough," referring to the ongoing gun violence in Yonkers.
Police said at least two men attacked Perez as he delivered food from the Emerald Diner to a Hawthorne Avenue building. Xavier Goodwine, 18, was arrested in what police describe as a robbery gone wrong.
Perez's father could not hold back tears as he marched to where his son died. Perez's sister called for action. "The system, the community, everyone failed my brother," said Virginia Perez. "This should never have happened."
Virginia Perez plans to lobby legislators to pass laws that mandate more security in buildings like the one where her brother was found in a stairwell.
Goodwine is being held without bail. Yonkers police believe other suspects may exist.
