Police say the arrest of one person in a Pearl River burglary that took place Wednesday revealed the mystery surrounding dozens of burglaries in New Jersey.
The pursuit of the burglars, one of whom remains at large, caused schools in Pearl River and Nanuet to be locked down.
Police say Diego Serna, 27, was arrested with thousands of dollars worth of jewelry stuffed in his pockets.
According to investigators, many stolen goods were found in the car Serna and accomplice Leo Gonzales drove while committing the burglaries. Police say Serna and Gonzales robbed two other homes in New Jersey before being caught in Rockland County.
Police say a search of Serna?s apartment turned up eight iPods, two laptop computers, four digital cameras and as much as $40,000 worth of jewelry from at least 10 of the burglaries he admitted to committing in just one month.
Serna is an undocumented immigrant from Columbia living in New Jersey, according to investigators. He was charged with burglary and possession of stolen property. Serna was arraigned Wednesday and is being held on $35,000 bail at the Rockland County Jail.
A warrant is out for Gonzales? arrest.
