Stony Point school bus driver saves choking boy

Posted: Updated:

A Stony Point school bus driver came to the rescue when her 10-year-old passenger started choking on a piece of candy while riding the bus last week.

Carlos DeJesus, a fifth-grader at Farley Middle School, was sitting in the seat right behind the bus driver when he started choking on a piece of hard candy.

DeJesus stood up, grabbed his throat and told the driver he was choking. Elmira Scott, a 20-year veteran of Haverstraw Transit, jumped into action and administered the Heimlich maneuver.

The boy was able to breathe again, but Scott said the ordeal left her shaken up. "After the incident I got a little nervous because a lot of ?what ifs? came into mind and I'm glad that I happened to be there and knew what to do to help Carlos," she said.
