Stricter penalties sought for driving drunk with kids
Local lawmakers are introducing legislation that would crack down on parents that drive drunk and take their children along for the ride. Assemblywoman Amy Paulin (D-Scarsdale) and Assemblyman Mike Spano (R-Yonkers) are proposing legislation that would make driving drunk with a minor a separate and more serious crime. The legislation would raise the penalties, making them the same as driving while intoxicated as an aggravated offense. It would mean larger fines, up to one year in jail and longer license suspensions. The proposal comes on the heels of more than a dozen cases over the last year in Westchester in which parents have been caught driving drunk with minors in the car. The legislation is with the Assembly Transportation Committee. Both legislators say they hope it will come to the floor for a vote by the next session.
