Landfill capping causing a stink with residents
The town of Monroe is in the process of capping an old landfill, however, the process is causing a stink among some neighbors. Dump trucks and tractors are spreading heaps of soil on top of a landfill that hasn?t been used for 20 years. As each layer is applied, the recyclable materials decompose and give off an odor. Town officials say there is a strict code of regulations they must follow in capping the site. Also, the town has tested nearby well water and nothing dangerous has shown up.After the landfill is completely capped, grass seed is laid down. By spring, the land should be green and the project will be complete. The town will then consider what to do with the eight acres of grassy space the newly capped landfill will create.
