Cop accused in immigrant's death makes bail
(09/07/07) WHITE PLAINS ? The Mt. Kisco police officer accused in the death of an immigrant managed to post his $100,000 bail Friday morning.
George Bubaris made bail with the help of a bail bondsman and by using his house as collateral. He pleaded not guilty Thursday in the death of Rene Perez, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala.
Bubaris and two other officers encountered Perez at a Mt. Kisco Laundromat following a 911 call, which was made by Perez, on April 28. Bubaris is accused of dumping Perez on the side of a deserted road at the Bedford border. Perez later died of a stomach wound, which was allegedly caused by Bubaris.
Bubaris? lawyer, Ed Hayes, said Perez had a reputation for getting into fights on the street. He believes Perez could have sustained the stomach injury that way.
?The worst that happens here is that Bubaris does what the Bedford cops do,? said Hayes. ?The Bedford cops bring him to Mt. Kisco and Bubaris brings him back to Bedford. That?s the worst that he does.?
A spokesperson for the Westchester County District Attorney?s Office told News 12 Westchester that Bubaris is due back in court on November 29.
