Valley Cottage under boil water advisory

Hundreds of residents in Valley Cottage were without water for almost 12 hours after a water main break Wednesday, prompting a boil water advisory to go into effect Thursday throughout the weekend.
United Water officials say they believe a water main broke during construction to revitalize streets and sidewalks in the area. The Board of Health is requiring residents to boil water for at least one minute before consumption. United Water says it is safe to use tap water for washing and bathing purposes.
Water quality tests are set to be finished this Sunday. Residents will be notified if the boil water advisory will be lifted at that time. United Water officials say the 48-hour boil water advisory is required by the county Board of Health whenever there is a water main break that lasts more than four hours.
