High gas prices take the spark out of July 4th plans
About 41 million Americans are hitting the roads for Fourth of July plans, however, many in Westchester and Hudson Valley say they will not travel as far this year due to high gas prices.
According to Westchester County?s latest survey, the average for regular unleaded is $3.30 a gallon, which is about 15 cents more than the national average.
Many residents say they changed their holiday plans because driving costs too much. That sentiment was also shared by boaters who face even steeper prices on the water.
Wednesday is also the beginning of the state's "Stop-DWI" initiative that targets drunk drivers. State police say they will have extra patrols on all roadways as well as the Tappan Zee Bridge and they have a zero-tolerance policy. State police say the Fourth of July has more drunk-driving arrests and drunk-driving fatalities than any other day in the summer.
