K-9 cop takes bite out of crime, collars fleeing suspect

Posted: Updated:

A K-9 cop is credited for taking down a suspect who led police on a wild chase in Newburgh Friday.

K-9 officer Kevin Lahar and his partner, Tanzo, spotted a car allegedly driven by 40-year-old Junior Parker blocking the road on First Street. Police say before Lahar could flash his lights, the driver took off. Lahar then pursued the suspect.According to police, Parker blew through numerous red lights, forced a taxi off the road and almost collided with a truck during the chase.

After reaching speeds of 90 mph, police say Parker abandoned his car on North Pierpont Avenue and took off on foot. Police say that's when Tanzo bounded after him, stopping him with his powerful jaws and hanging on until backup arrived.

Police say Parker was already on parole for a prior drug bust and had a suspended license. He is now facing felony charges and 17 more tickets.
