Teenage boy arrested for Ramapo synagogue fire
The investigation into a fire at the Bais Yehudi synagogue in Ramapo has led to the arrest of a teenage member of the congregation.
Police are charging a 15-year-old with reckless conduct. They say he was playing with matches inside the synagogue before it was completely destroyed by flames. Only the congregation?s torah survived the blaze.
The boy?s name is being withheld since he is a minor, but he has been referred to Rockland County Family Court for a June 26 hearing.
Members of the congregation had originally suspected a hate crime by anti-Semitic residents. Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss believes that despite the arrest, the synagogue is still being targeted for its religious beliefs. He says there had been threats prior to the fire, as well as bystanders celebrating the fire outside the synagogue.
