The city of Newburgh has enlisted some new technology in its war on gang graffiti.

City leaders say they are using a camera that can be moved around to graffiti problem spots to capture criminals in the act. Police say graffiti often serves as a way for gangs to mark their territory.

?It's demeaning and it brings down a lot of the other revitalization efforts we're doing,? said Mayor Nicholas Valentine. Valentine says if the camera works, the city will buy more. In addition to the new camera, DPW workers are redoubling their efforts to clean up graffiti.

Newburgh is also proposing an ordinance to toughen penalties against graffiti artists. If caught, criminals would face restitution, community service, fines or even jail time.
