Haverstraw teen's life honored after tragic accident

Posted: Updated:

More than 200 family members, friends and fellow North Rockland High School students gathered Wednesday to mourn a 17-year-old killed in a car accident.

North Rockland High School senior Jency Mendez, of Haverstraw, died Saturday after the car he was riding in with three other teens smashed into a utility pole on Route 304 in New City. Police say the other teens were ejected from the car and later hospitalized, but should be OK. Mendez died at the scene.

The emotion was evident as loved ones choked back tears on the steps of St. Peter's Church in Haverstraw Wednesday. A friend said of Mendez, ?you can?t just remember him one way, you'll just never forget him."
