Mirant plant gets extension to increase efficiencyPosted: Updated:
The Mirant Lovett coal-burning power station was supposed to be closed down Monday for failing to achieve state emissions standards but received a seven-day extension.
Local leaders say shutting the plant down would be detrimental to the local economy and put the plant?s 100 employees out of work.
Local politicians hope state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo will set a schedule to help the plan become energy efficient. The plant could be sold in the future and it is more marketable if it is fully functional rather than shut down.
