Congers diesel spill fuels water contamination fears
A cleanup is underway Tuesday after the gas tank on a truck ruptured, spilling about 10 gallons of diesel fuel in Congers.
Clarkstown police say a storm grate that was sticking up under a puddle is responsible for puncturing the gas tank on an Allied moving truck. The incident occurred at the parking lot of Bram Manufacturing on Route 9W. The fuel mixed with melting snow, and many fear it could spread into a nearby stream leading to Swartout Lake.
Castlton Environmental crews were busy suctioning up the spill and laying down booms to stop the spread. The county health department will be checking the water to make sure no fuel reached the stream.
