Efforts stepped up to identify torso washed ashore in Mamaroneck
Police intensified their efforts Monday to identify a woman whose torso washed ashore in a suitcase Saturday at Mamaroneck's Harbor Island Beach.
The FBI, New York State Police Department and county police are all working on the investigation. Officials say the woman was stabbed, but did not reveal what with. An extra-large shirt and size large pair of sweatpants were found draped over the body part in the suitcase.
The Mount Pleasant Police Department Marine Patrol spent more than five hours searching for clues in the Long Island Sound. Investigators were prepared to dive, but officials say without having a specific area to search, it would have been pointless. Police say the torso washed ashore after Friday's floods.
The victim is described as a Hispanic or light-skinned black woman, age 35 to 50 and weighing 180 to 200 pounds. Investigators hope the victim's tattoo of cherries will help them identify her. A tattoo artist told News 12 Hudson Valley the tattoo looks like it may have been completed in prison. Authorities believe flood waters brought the torso from someplace other than Mamaroneck.
