Highlands tax collector nabbed for pocketing town money
The man in charge of collecting taxes in Highlands is now charged with stealing almost $4,000 from the town.
James Dunlap, 39, is accused of stealing the interest accrued from delinquent taxpayers but recording the taxes were paid on time. State police say the thefts occurred over the course of two years to the tune of almost $3,800. They launched an investigation after an audit was performed by the state comptroller?s office.
Officials say Dunlap admitted to taking the money and resigned from his post at the town hall after a preliminary audit came out. Dunlap is facing a list of charges, including grand larceny and official misconduct. He was released on $5,000 bail after his arraignment.
