Orange County buys controversial homeless shelter for $9.5MPosted: Updated:
The Orange County Legislature voted Thursday in support of the county executive?s decision to purchase a controversial homeless shelter.
Camp LaGuardia will close its doors for good in a few months after lawmakers approved County Executive Edward Diana?s decision to buy the shelter for $9.5 million. The 200 acres of land is situated in the towns of Chester and Blooming Grove. Camp LaGuardia has been operated by New York City since the 1930s and houses about 1,000 homeless men.
Lawmakers who voted against the purchase are concerned municipalities could lose tax revenue and school taxes could go up. The supporters say they are looking forward to seeing an end to the problems surrounding the shelter. No word yet on what the county plans on doing with the land.
