Rockland legislators push for independent safety assessment of Indian Point

Legislators in Rockland County are pushing for an independent assessment of safety issues at the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant Tuesday.
Democratic State Assemblywoman-elect Ellen Jaffee wants an outside group to inspect the plant. Jaffee?s concerns about safety issues are shared by legislators serving on Rockland?s Environmental Committee. Jaffee says since the re-licensing of Indian Point is moving forward there is a short window of opportunity to have a good assessment of the status of the plant.
Plant owner Entergy spokesperson, Jim Steets, says if the committee has concerns on the impact of Indian Point on the environment, he would welcome them to assess what Entergy is doing to address those concerns. The resolution by the Rockland Environmental Committee now awaits approval in the Rockland Legislature, which is expected to vote on the proposal Tuesday evening.
