The FDNY named an Upper Nyack 9/11 hero an honorary New York City firefighter Friday.Welles Remy Crowther, a 24-year-old equities trader and volunteer firefighter, was working in the World Trade Center on September 11th. Witnesses say a distinctive red bandana Crowther was wearing as he helped trapped workers in the World Trade Center later helped them identify his good deeds. Crowther?s family says he was on the 104th floor of the south tower when he used his volunteer firefighter training to help people like Lin Yung, who was badly burned in the attack. Yung says she was able to identify Crowther from a photo. Witnesses say he carried some people down stairs and helped others to safety. The fire commissioner says Crowther showed compassion and courage, giving his life to help save up to 18 others. Shortly before his death, Crowther told his father he wanted to make the switch from a volunteer firefighter to a full-time member of the FDNY.
