Pilot perishes in Montgomery small plane crash

A small plane crashed Thursday in a wooded area near Orange County Airport, killing the pilot.
State police confirm 79-year-old Frank Holland, of West Orange, New Jersey, was the lone occupant. The 32-year-old, twin-engine Cessna 310 is also registered to Holland. Airport officials say the plane appeared to gain little altitude when it took off about 1 p.m. It crashed moments later near the runway and burned.
Police say the victim had driven to the airport with his son to pick up the aircraft, which was being serviced. Officials say the son called police from the ground after noticing a problem after takeoff. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
