Female Tappan Zee welder launches second legal salvo against bosses
A female welder on the Tappan Zee Bridge has launched another round of attacks against the New York State Thruway Authority and her supervisors.
Julia Basile, 35, has worked as a welder on the bridge since 2003. She filed a sexual harassment suit last year against the Thruway Authority and a supervisor. Basile, from Nyack, says the discrimination from her bosses keeps getting worse. Her attorney has now filed a second suit, this one against the Thruway Authority and three of his client?s supervisors. One of the people named in the suit is Thruway Regional Director Ramesh Mehta. The suit claims Basile is harassed, embarrassed and written up for fake events, while other male workers sleep, smoke pot and do their laundry on the job.
Basile?s attorney says he wants monetary damages for his client, but a specific dollar amount is not mentioned in the complaint. Basile is the first female welder on the Tappan Zee Bridge. She says she's been welding for 20 years, and she wants to continue to do her job despite the abuse. The New York State Thruway Authority has no comment because it says it hasn't yet seen the lawsuit.
