Rockland schools get a Homeland Security checkup

Posted: Updated:

(09/14/06) NANUET - With the start of the new school year, New York State Department of Homeland Security is teaming up with local administrators to guarantee school safety.

Operation Safeguard is mandated by the state's homeland security office. Clarkstown police say every school in Rockland County can expect an inspection in order to guarantee the security of the students. On Thursday, Clarkstown police toured Nanuet High School with its principal. Because the high school was renovated during the summer, police say there was more to go over during this year's inspection. Police say it is best to become familiar with the building layout at the start of the school year in order to better prepare for an emergency.

Nanuet High School has 13 surveillance cameras on the premises. The principal says he recently updated the emergency security plans and went over them with his staff last week.
