Waywayanda mosque under construction faces setback after vandals strike

An Islamic center that is under construction is facing a major setback after vandals broke several windows and ripped holes in the siding of the building.
Police say the vandals struck sometime Wednesday night into Thursday at the site along Ryerson Road. The Middletown Islamic Center has been under construction since 2004 and work was almost complete. State police are investigating the vandalism. They say they are certain this isn't a bias crime, but rather just criminal mischief. Just yards away from the mosque is an ATV trail, which is a spot that police say is an easy get-a-way for vandals.
New surveillance cameras are being installed to prevent any further vandalism. The total damage is estimated at around $15,000. The center is asking for donations from the community to foot the cost of the damage.
