Playing with Fire: Ramapo rehires retired fire inspector
The Ramapo Town Board on Wednesday unanimously voted to rehire the town's former chief fire inspector Tom Buckley, who could now have a large role in overseeing the state-ordered reinspections of dozens of Ramapo's private schools.
Current fire inspector Adam Peltz is on desk duty amid allegations that he turned a blind eye toward serious code violations at several schools.
A public comment period intended to be held after the vote was canceled by Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence, who is facing corruption charges.
If Buckley accepts the part-time position, he will be paid $80 an hour. The deadline for Ramapo officials to have their reinspections done for the state is Thursday.
